I've been working on a load workup for my .308 for long-range shooting. I'm using 175 grain Sierra TMKs and trying to find the sweet spot with consistent velocity and accuracy. Would love to hear what others are doing for their long-range setups.
When I was into long range 600 to 1000 yard competitions using a .45-70 cartridge, it's 82 grains of Swiss 1-1/2F, under a .060" LDPE wad, under a 532 grain bore rider slick wrapped in 7lb Seth Cole paper. This makes for a potent virtual .45-90 cartridge. Even I was amazed at the accuracy that could at times rival high powered smokeless cartridges in bolt guns with scopes.
I used to run this load in replica Sharps and Rem rollers with 30-34" bbls using iron tang and front peep sights, but as time and age advance, these dayze it's a simple CVA Scout break open w/25" bbl and 4-16x44 glass and lighter BP PPB bore rider loads of 65-75 grains under a 400-480 grain patched slick and short distances of 200-400 yards.
