Planning a trip to visit family and trying to figure out the best route. I'd like to bring a firearm with me, but going through New York State makes that tricky. I've heard stories about the strict laws there and how it can really complicate things. Avoiding NY adds a ridiculous amount of drive time, so I'm weighing my options. Curious if anyone else has dealt with this and what you decided to do. I'm open to suggestions on routes that might work.

A road trip from NJ to ME had me going into personal overkill - AR15 locked in a hard case and stored in the back of the SUV, with it's BCG removed and locked in a hard ammo case and stored up front under my feet (driver's side), and having paperwork intentions of shooting at the Sig Center in NH.

STILL realizing such a trip is a gamble and that I could be cuffed and jailed - that's the state(s) of our Union ... so far.

My real sadness with your trip, rfd, is the fact that you were driving thru the heart of our Revolution, where most of the battles were fought! True the founders wrote the Constitution in PA, but that was after they scurried there from NY and NJ, which along with MA, took the brunt of the fighting. I too love the Northeast and our New England states. :)

YEs, drjjpdc, you are unfortunately correct. As a Rev War reenactor and student of our American 18th century, it hits home even harder. Most folks don't realize that the vast majority of the Rev War skirmishes and battles occurred here in the Garden State. NJ was the hub of the Rev ... and look at it now. A sad epitaph due to the ignorance of too many of its citizens and criminal leadership.

A Bess over every homestead hearth ... but these dayze far better an AR15, sez me.

NRA's magazine, American Rifleman, had a great story a few years ago. It was one about a boy's achool or academy that actually armed the student's in VT, I believe. They actually took part in some local skirmishes. That would blow some folks minds today!

About your Revolutionary war interests, one of my other gun sites, www.levergun-scoundrels.com, has an administrator. He can trace his families involvement going back to Concord. A great guy by the way too. He posts this link every year.

Our 3rd NJ "Jersey Blues" Regiment Commander has lineage that goes back to the early 18th century, the F&I War, and the great Rev War. No matter what - if you are an American, you are at the least a virtual descendant of the principals of our founders, and as such it is our duty to carry on as promoters of our great Constitution.

I had a heated argument with a military pal of mine once. We were discussing the importance of our flag vs our Constitution. He was vehemently on the flag side while I was on the other. We have had a number of flags but only 1 Constitution.
