So, I've been digging into whether binary triggers are even legal in New Jersey. I'm relatively new to the state and trying to get a handle on all the laws. I thought they were cool after seeing some videos online, but now I'm second-guessing myself. I checked a few sites, but the legal jargon just makes my head spin. Honestly, I've been trying to figure this out since last weekend and still feel confused. Does anyone here have experience with this? I'd really appreciate any insights or links to resources that can help clarify things. Thanks!

Anything and everything can be deemed illegal NJ. Hopefully that will change next year.

Illegal as far as I know. I really want one of the Warhammer Super Safety triggers but they won't ship to NJ.

most Binary Triggers are not legal per the ATF, it's not a NJ thing..................
And as for "Next year" - even IF we got a Republican Gov. the State Legislature is still mostly Democrats so unless those seats change, nothing will improve.......

As a gun person you voluntarily moved into the socialist state of NJ? Five states do not have an explicit right to keep and bear arms provision in their state constitutions: California, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, and New York. Our 40 member Senate has 25 Democrats and our 80 member Assembly has 52 Democrats. It would take a political earthquake to change those numbers.

But welcome to our state, we may be a minority in this state but we are a vocal one. Are you near any of the gun clubs in our state?

Since when are binaries illegal federally? Even FRT's are perfectly legal according to the ATF!

Yes, binary triggers are illegal in New Jersey. Possession of a binary trigger is a third-degree crime, punishable by 3-5 years in prison and a fine of up to $15,000. The law also makes it a third-degree crime to manufacture, transport, ship, sell, or dispose of a binary trigger.

Penalties for Possession:
  • Third-degree crime: 3-5 years imprisonment and a fine of up to $15,000.
  • Consecutive sentencing: The penalty for possessing a binary trigger runs consecutively with any penalty for possessing an assault firearm or machine gun.
Legal Background:
  • The law defines a binary trigger as a device that fires one round upon pulling the trigger and another upon release.
  • This law is consistent with existing New Jersey prohibitions on bump stocks and trigger cranks, which increase the firing rate of semi-automatic firearms.

  • New Jersey's law treats binary triggers as a type of machine gun, even though they are not classified as such under federal law.
  • There was a 90-day grace period for individuals and 30 days for licensed dealers to voluntarily surrender binary triggers after the law's enactment.
  • After this period, possession of a binary trigger is a crime.
